You are invited to our film showing and discussion on Empowering Refugee Voices in collaboration with Swansea Asylum Seekers Support (SASS).
We are really keen to involve as many people as possible, especially refugees who would like their stories to be better known, or who have already been involved in recording, publishing or public speaking for different audiences. So please come if you can – and please think of others to pass this invitation on to.
We can assist with transport if necessary and we are trying to arrange for people who can’t make it to “Zoom” in – please let us know if either of these would be helpful for you.
We will show three recently produced videos (approx. 45 minutes in total):
  • No Friends But the Mountains – Walking in the Shoes of Kurdish Refugees: An animation from Swansea Asylum Seekers Support and Hafan Books
  • Refugee Employment Film: An edited compilation of interviews on Refugee Employment from Swansea City of Sanctuary CAMP Group (Campaigning, Activism, Media, Politics)
  • Art from Penally: Images from an exhibition of artwork by residents of the short-lived detention centre for asylum seekers near Tenby
There will be a chance to look round the Exhibition Home Away From Home which includes 6 printed panels with refugee stories. We will also hear from refugees who have shared from their lived experience in schools.
We will then discuss how to work together to make refugee voices better heard and how to support those who wish to share something of their stories of seeking sanctuary in different ways:
  • through recording, editing and publishing video or audio interviews, animations, blog posts and written collections;
  • face-to-face including giving talks in schools, community groups and elsewhere, and preparedness for media interviews, policy consultations, etc.
