On March 19th, 2024, Swansea University’s Social Works Department celebrated World Social Work Day, on a theme that emphasised the need for social workers to adopt innovative, community-led approaches that are grounded in indigenous wisdom and harmonious coexistence with nature. Fru, one of our Management Committee members, was invited as a guest speaker, to address the pressing issues of climate change mobility and climate refugees.
Fru’s thought-provoking talk shed light on the growing challenges posed by climate change and its impact on human displacement. He stressed the importance of social workers embracing new strategies rooted in the ethos of their profession, which upholds social justice and human rights. In the face of increasing reductions in statutory service provision for forcibly displaced people in the UK, Fru called for a spirit of welcome and inclusivity.
Thank you to Fru for providing this thought-provoking talk, and to Swansea University for their invitation.
