Celebrating Community at ‘One Killay’

We were delighted to be invited by Killay Community Council to the One Killay community event, held on Saturday 17th May at St Hilary’s Church Hall. The fun day of community unity celebrated cultures from around the world through dance displays, live music, dragon puppet making, hair braiding and henna hand painting for children, costume try on – and more! It was a fantastic example of what community cohesion can look like in action.

Sarah Gee, the organiser of the event, kindly shared this message:

“We greatly appreciated you all coming to share your culture and obvious passion for dance with us all. Please pass on thanks from Killay Community Council to all of the dancers who attended.

We would be most grateful if you could also pass on special thanks to Amanda who led the Salsa dance class. It was great fun and her wonderful energy and enthusiasm got everyone up and participating.”

We also loved this message from a local resident, posted on Facebook:

“Today’s event to celebrate World Cultural Day in St Hilary’s Church Hall was an absolute blast! It was amazing to watch talented dancers from all over the world showcasing their unique styles. I thoroughly enjoyed every single performance and even got to jump in and try some salsa dancing myself.”

The event coincided with the lead-up to the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (May 21st), which highlights the vital role of cultural diversity in building sustainable development, peace, and social cohesion. It promotes intercultural dialogue, human rights, and greater understanding between communities as key to global stability and progress.

Thank you to the Killay Community Council for inviting us, and to the Coop and City Councillors for Dunvant and Killay for supporting this event.
