This week, Oxfam GB have released a powerful short video showcasing the work of our local Oxfam branch, Oxfam Castle Street, and their ongoing commitment to building welcoming, inclusive community spaces.
The Swansea Oxfam Bookshop first achieved a Sanctuary Award in 2014, becoming one of the earliest organisations in the UK to be recognised in this way. Since then, they have continued to re-establish and be re-accredited for the award multiple times – a reflection of their sustained commitment to sanctuary principles and community solidarity over the years.
We continue to be inspired by the dedication of the team at Oxfam Castle Street and the people who bring the space to life every day.
Special thanks to Phil, a long-standing and well-known member of the community who has supported Swansea City of Sanctuary for many years, as well as to all the volunteers at Oxfam Bookshop whose commitment helps make this space what it is!
Oxfam GB writes:
In Swansea, an Oxfam bookshop recognised as a Place of Sanctuary has become a regular meeting place for people seeking asylum and for refugees.
People come here to volunteer, spend time together, and get to know each other. Over time, it has become more than a shop, while also supporting communities around the world. People from different backgrounds share the same space. Conversations happen, and a sense of community begins to grow.
“I met people who are in the same circumstances. It’s like my sanctuary.” – Aruni, Volunteer
It is one small example of something happening across the UK, everyday acts of kindness and connection, bringing people together.
Because in a world that can feel divided, these are the kinds of places where people take acts of hope, and where everyone can feel safe, belong, and be part of a community.
